SAMBA TORONTO FALL SCHEDULE AT THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSICHello Sambistas! Many of you have been asking us throughout the summer how to join us playing in the bateria, or how to take lessons. We don’t hold rehearsals or offer lessons during the summer, and our performance schedule has unfortunately made it impossible to return your enquiries until now. Our apologies, but here’s the good news: we will soon be starting up our lessons and rehearsals again, so you will soon have lots of opportunity to samba with us! See below for our fall schedule: N.B. All classes take place at The Royal Conservatory of Music, 90 Croatia St. (across from Dufferin Mall). 1) Brazilian Samba (“Samba de Raiz/Pagode”)Instructors Alan Canadense and special guests from Toronto’s sambista musician community.Wednesday evenings 8 – 9:30pmStarts Sept 27.In this course, students will explore many styles of samba from different parts of Brazil. They will examine its history and take a look at some of the country’s most important performers of the art form including Fundo de Quintal, Zeca Pagodinho, Paulinho da Viola, Cartola, Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim, Leila Pinheiro, Elis Regina, and others. Students will perform and study music and poetry, using the percussion instruments of the Samba de Raiz (sometimes known as Pagode) style, including: pandeiro, rebolo, tamborim, cuica, reco-reco, agogo, surdo, chocalho, cavaquinho (4 string guitar) and others. We will also study the instruments and techniques of the samba tradition from the famed Brazilian Carnaval, known as Samba Enredo. All instruments are provided, although students may easily purchase their own from a local retailer, if desired.
